Англійська лексика з книг про Гаррі Поттера

Я застрягла на середині п'ятої книзі. Я не встигла її дослухати перед поїздкою, а перебування в Португалії вирішила зробити Harry Potter-free holiday, а після приїзду в мене почався курс РСІ . Але пост цей був написаний ще до від'їзду, так що публікую)

Цього разу я буду писати до всіх слів синоніми, не просто копіювати зі словника, а намагатися згадати, що я сама знаю (I'll rack my brain in search for a term that I know ).
to go bizark / ballistic (go mad, angry): Mum went bizark; '... better hurry up, Mum's going ballistic, she says we're going to miss the train ...'

to come off - вийти, вийти: his come back did not come off as he wanted , he needed it up.
Come off it! частенько говорять герої книги, коли чують щось неймовірне. По-русски я б переклала як "вистачить заливати!", "Досить вже мені локшину на вуха вішати".

to carry on (continue doing smth) - продовжувати робити щось: W e are working as hard as we can so that Voldemort could not carry on his plans .

abysmal - гірше, ніж жахливий: 'Guess what I got for my birthday?' said Neville.
'Another Remembrall?' said Harry, remembering the marble-like device Neville's grandmother had sent him in an effort to improve his abysmal memory .

to follow suit (to do / act like the others) - робити так само, як і інші, уподібниться чиїмось наприклад: 'Oh, let's get out of here.'
She slammed down her own knife and fork; Ron looked longingly at his half-finished apple pie but followed suit.

to give off - випускати: Harry knew at once why Neville had chosen to pass this compartment by . The girl gave off an aura of distinct dottiness

to stand by - стояти осторонь: Don't stand by and let the others have all the fun .
Нещодавно дізналася, що є standby tickets на авіаперельоти. Це означає, що ти приходиш в аеропорт і летиш на тому рейсі, на якому є місця.
to pass by - проходити мимо (приклад вище)

to point out - вказати на щось, когось, звертати увагу на щось, когось: Harry could not help noticing that a lot of people stared back at him with great interest and that several of them nudged their neighbours and pointed him out. After he had met this behaviour in five consecutive carriages he remembered that the Daily Prophet had been telling its readers all summer what a lying show -off he was.

to show off (to brandish smth, to brag about smth) - хизуватися, хвалитися, красуватися, малюватися; a show-off - хвалько (приклад вище)

to do smb in (to kill, to murder) - "пришити", вбити, прикінчити: 'Why?' said Harry irritably. 'I thought Voldemort was supposed to be lying low , or are you telling me he's going to jump out from behind a dustbin to try and do me in ?'

Ось просто все продумано в цих книгах. Навіть лікарі не доктора, а цілителі!

healer from to heal - лікувати, зцілювати. Time heals - час лікує.

Цей невеличкий діалог навів мене на думки про етимологію слова "доктор". Я відразу згадала, що по-іспанська docto (або більш просторечная форма ducho - досвідчений, досвідчений в чомусь). А латинське doctus - вчений, освічений, освічений; знає, хто розуміється.

to fish out - "виловити", дістати: 'Fire away, then, Rita,' said Hermione serenely, fishing a cherry out from the bottom of her glass .

a pronounced change - помітна зміна

bridge of the nose - перенісся: Hagrid was standing beside the doors into the Entrance Hall , waiting for a crowd of Ravenclaws to pass. He was still as heavily bruised as he had been on the day he had come back from his mission to the giants and there was a new cut right across the bridge of his nose .

quibble - гра слів, каламбур; to quibble - сперечатися, сперечатися через дрібниці; каламбурити.
If you're satisfied with the contract, why are you quibbling about the exact hours of work ? - Якщо контракт тебе влаштовує, навіщо ти хто сперечається щодо уточнення годин роботи?

tuck in - жадібно їсти, наминати: There is a time for speech-making, but this is not it. Tuck in! (Тут швидше це сказано з іронією)
He stared at Hermione and the Weasleys, all tucking into their sandwiches, and thought how he would feel if they went back to Hogwarts without him .

to be on tenterhooks - сидіти як на голках, мучитися невідомістю, букв. на "гачках": he was still on tenterhooks that Hagrid might get the sack

to bring smth up (syn. to mention) - згадати щось: he could not stop himself dwelling on the dream in which he had been Voldemort - though he did not bring it up with Ron and Hermione again ; he did not want another telling-off from Hermione.
to tell off (to shoot down, to criticise) - вичитувати, розносити

to lose one's marbles (to go crazy, to go off the deep end) - сходити з розуму, букв. втрачати свої кульки (звивини): 'We do not need another story about how Harry's lost his marbles !' said Hermione angrily.

to look daggers at smb. - злобно дивитися, кидати гнівні погляди на кого-л .: 'But of course,' she said, lowering the quill and looking daggers at Hermione, 'Little Miss Perfect would not want that story out there, would she?'

to stick to smth - дотримуватися якогось думки, вірити: 'So you actually stick to it, do you, that He Who Must Not Be Named is back ?' said Rita

It was a narrow escape - (можу перевести тільки описово) Нам пощастило! Ще б трохи і нас би спіймали / помітили і т.п.

to corner smb - загнати в кут: he had a look of someone who was just cornered

Назва факультету Hufflepuff утворено від фрази to huff and puff - букв. пихкати і важко дихати - пнеться, тобто намагатися щось зробити. Як пам'ятаєте, студенти цього факультету зірок з неба не зривали. Крім Седріка Дігорі в четвертій книзі.

В The Goblet of Fire Герміона організовує товариство із захисту домашніх ельфів, і на бейджиках, які Герміона дає вступає в суспільство написано SPEW Рон ще обурюється: What ?! Spew ?!

- No! It is SPE W.

І правильно обурюється, тому що to spew - нудити, рвати.

Я дуже повеселилася, коли дізналася, як цей пасаж переклали російською. У російських книгах товариство із захисту ельфів називається Г А В Н Е. Вже не пам'ятаю, як розшифровується, але перекладачам 5 балів. Молодці!)
